Birth of the Beetle: The Development of the Volkswagen by Porsche

Chris Barber

Synopsis
This is a record of the Beetle's early evolution, chronicled by an English teacher who spent 20 years digging through untapped sources, including archives he discovered at Porsche. The book covers the period from the Porsche expose of 17 January 1934 until July 1945, with the first lists of experimental and test cars by Porsche in Gmund, Austria.

A cultural history of the development of the Volkswagen Beetle as told through historical photographs, many never before published in the world.

One of the best historic books to come out in recent times, this book contains over 350 photos and designs - most of which have never previously been published. Covers the period from January 1934 toJuly 1945, with the final lists of experimental and test cars run by Porsche in Austria.

Chris Barber's entry in our Guestbook

Very interesting and informative. In my recent book "The BIRTH of the BEETLE: The Development of the Volkswagen by Ferdinand Porsche", Erwin Komenda is, of course, mentioned many, many times! Thanks for the site. Chris Barber,Germany

Porsche 356: Driving in Its Purest Form

By Dirk-Michael Conradt. A superb history of the 356, from wartime tinkering with VWs to the Type 64 and through all years of 356 production. Excellent early photos, production shots, design studies, competition cars, exploded views, line drawings, specs, production figures, developmental history and much, much more. Hundreds of photos capture all the details through the years. Hdbd., 9 1/4x 10 1/2, 264 pages, 267 black - white photos, 45 color illustrations.

Less broad than Ludvigsen's book but no less detailed, and in a slightly larger format which makes the pictures larger and better, "Driving" focuses specifically on the 356 and it's internal development and acceptance by the world. This book is really the standard for the 356 owner.

Porsche 911 Forever young

by Tobias Aichele: A Superb 911 Chronicle

An excellent chronicle that disproves the notion that there are too many 911 histories out there. Aichele has written one of the best. The story is told from the perspective of the car's major components and offers a unique history of engine, drivetrain, suspension, brake, chassis, and body development. The cast of major characters is reexamined, but this time with anecdotes from the leader of the Porsche car-body-construction department, Erwin Komenda, designers and craftsmen who lived through the era and benefitted form the insider's position. Not just another 911 rehash.
