In
1937 at the Daimler Benz bodywork plant in Sindelfingen, the 30 pre-series
Volkswagens, the VW 30, were built. Every
car, 29 saloons without a rear window and one convertible, had a fully steel
bodywork with a small bonnet, visual and ventilator slots, and headlights which
had been moved forwards. The doors
opened towards the back. The
indicators were fixed into the sides at the front of the car.
An air cooled opposed 4 cylinder rear engine achieved 22 horsepower.
In 1937, one of the VW 30 pre-series was equipped with machine guns and
three seats, to serve military test purposes.
